An icebreaker has reached a drifting Russian cargoship in the White Sea after its crew were airlifted to safety.

The 1,600-dwt Kapitan Kuznetsov (built 1985) will be towed into Arkhangelsk following its discovery 100 kilometres from Cape Kanin on Wednesday.

The vessel had been missing since Tuesday morning after it lost contact with owner Volgaflot in stormy seas.

All 11 crew and one passenger were taken off the ship by helicopter.

Two were slightly injured.

A wave had damaged a bulkhead and wrecked all the instruments, so it had no electricity or rudder control.

The engine could not be restarted.
