The Italian bulker Rosalia D'Amato has been released by Somalia pirates after seven months in captivity.

Italian owner Perseveranza Spa di Navigazione said the 74,500-dwt vessel (built 2001) was freed on Friday morning.

The crew of six Italians and 15 Filipinos are safe and well, it added.

"They have reassumed control of the vessel and will be proceeding towards a safe port once the vessel is fully secured by the Italian military authorities. Their families have been informed," the owner said.

"The owners extend deep thanks to the crew for the courage and fortitude that they have shown throughout their long ordeal, and to their families for their patience, support and trust in such difficult circumstances."

The company is not commenting on any other aspect of the case, including whether a ransom was paid, for fear of jeopardising seafarers on ships still held off Somalia.

The vessel was hijacked after failing to outrun an attack in the Arabian Sea.

It was heading to Brazil from Oman.

It is fitted with a citadel, but it is thought not all of the crew managed to reach the safe room.
