Employer information:

Our client is a well known designer, manufacturer and operator of high speed craft and have built a creditable reputation within their field. Their hovercraft are used in various sectors including military, paramilitary, commercial and rescue sectors.


Summary of role:

Lead the design and production engineering team in order to support project manufacturing and product / market development

• Lead the prioritisation and allocation of design and production engineering resources to deliver production ready designs on time to support procurement and production

• Deliver work planning and prioritisation in the design department, drive productivity by instilling a sense of urgency.  Engage with project, production and supply chain management to ensure design delivery matches the business needs

• Deliver an improvement in project cost to build through value engineering, simplification and design innovation

• Lead and control the relationship with Lloyds and other registries as appropriate

• Engage with the business to extract lessons from manufacturing to be integrated into design and to build in customer market requirements

• Set the design engineering quality standards and enforce a standard design process

• Provide design engineering expertise to the Customer support team for in service craft.


Required qualifications and experience:

• Qualified and experienced Naval Architect with demonstrable skills and experience in the high speed craft field managing design engineering

• Have been the engineering authority within an organisation or on a significant project

• Demonstrable experience of applying design engineering to the standards required of Lloyds or similar registries.  Significant experience of engaging with and controlling a relationship with the registry

• Experience running a marine design engineering team

• Demonstrable ability to apply a process and to achieve continuous improvement

• Commercial and budget management skills

• Communication (written and verbal) and customer facing skills

•  Demonstrable sense of urgency / ability to get things done / ability to prioritise without compromising quality and technical content

• Evidence of technical skill within the at least one of the marine engineering disciplines highlighted in the objectives

• Adept user of MS Office business applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Project)

• Significant experience working on or leading users of CAD (2D and 3D) systems

• Experience on air cushion or weight-sensitive marine vehicle projects an advantage
