To service our growing client base, we have developed an exciting new programme for a Trainee Marine Surveyor which offers a rewarding and challenging career development path for a motivated, ambitious and committed individual looking for a shore-based career in the maritime sector.

The programme will follow a strict three year development plan leading to an outstanding opportunity for the right candidate to become a fully qualified and multi-disciplined Marine Surveyor.

Candidates for the programme will:

  • be educated to a degree level or equivalent or hold a Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree in a maritime discipline;
  • possess a minimum of four years' sea time; alternatively be able to display relevant and recent experience of a hands-on shipping role within a ship owning, ship management, classification, flag state or other maritime environment;
  • have an EU-working entitlement and be willing to work in, and relocate to Cardiff, UK;
  • be prepared to initially work in an office-based administrative position within an office environment whilst developing towards a hands-on role within the marine environment;
  • be willing to travel short-distances around UK and Europe as required, often at short notice;
  • be hard working and enthusiastic;
  • be motivated and committed to developing a long career in the shipping industry.

The Idwal Marine Surveyor Programme

 

Year 1: Development and Education

Year one is largely office based, although with a mandatory requirement to visit a minimum of four vessels in a "shadow" inspection capacity alongside a senior marine surveyor or other Idwal personnel. The candidate will in turn  be focused on reading, adjusting and refining reports received from Idwal Marine surveyors, ensuring they are checked for accuracy and legibility as well as improving the final report content so that it is client-specific, high quality and issued to our global client base in a  timely manner.  

The candidate will help to prepare reports to clients following close cooperation and liaison with internal technical departments, external surveyors and the General Manager. This part of the role is administrative in nature but forms the critical foundation of a comprehensive understanding of the commercial and technical expectations of our clients who expect only the highest quality of standards. The administrative workload and report-writing requirements of this role are extensive but are fundamental to the candidate’s professional development.

In addition there will be extensive internal support offered to the candidate through monthly Personal Professional Development tutorials hosted by the company and other industry experts such as P&I Clubs, Flag states, Class societies etc.

The costs of the candidate’s student membership to IIMS will also be covered in full by the company.

Y1 Salary expectations – circa GBP £28k + training package + benefits

Y2: Furthering professional knowledge & developing surveying skills

Year two remains primarily office-based, although there is an increased expectation of between six and eight vessel surveys within the period. Two of these surveys are to be performed "solo" and entirely independent of any additional support.

The candidate is still required to contribute extensively to the Quality Assurance function of the surveying department and will continue to read, review and adjust surveyor reports to meet the expectations of our clients. The candidate will also begin to contribute and suggest report improvements and contribute to the effective performance monitoring of the outsourced survey network under the close support of the General Manager and the technical team. The candidate will continue with the mandatory distance learning training courses throughout the year. In addition to the on-going distance learning and the internal PPD courses, the candidate will also have the opportunity to select two specialised training courses.Mandatory Training:

  • Continuation of the IIMS distance learning course selected during Y1 of the programme.
  • Attendance at dry docking of a client-managed vessel alongside a senior superintendent (1 week)
  • Maritime Internal Auditor Course at Warsash Maritime Academy

Y2 Salary Expectations - circa £30k + training + benefits

Y3 - Becoming a Marine Surveyor

Year three is graduation year and has an increased focus towards the Marine Surveying discipline with more time spent in practical situations and hands-on Marine Surveying.  The candidate will continue to heavily support the Quality Assurance process of the company and will continue to liaise closely with other marine surveyors and technical staff within the company to ensure that all survey content is consistently delivered to the exceptional standards expected by our clients.

In the final year, the expectation for ships’ to be surveyed increases to a minimum of 12 with a minimum of four of these surveys undertaken completely independently, subject to progress made during the period.

The candidate should have by now completed the mandatory IIMS distance learning course and dependent upon the desired discipline of the surveyor will be granted a continuation of Personal Professional Development in a discipline of his/her choice. The budget for which shall be capped at a maximum of GBP 5000 per annum and for a maximum of a further one year.

The costs of the candidate’s Full Associate membership to IIMS will be covered in full by the company.

Y3 Salary Expectations – circa £32k + training + benefits

NB: Upon successful completion of the Idwal Marine Surveyor Programme, the candidate will be eligible to apply for a permanent position as Marine Surveyor with Idwal Marine, subject to the availability of such a role at the time of completion of the programme.
