This position offers an exciting and rewarding opportunity for the right candidate with one of the region’s largest shipowners and operators.   

The Marine Superintendent ensures that vessels continue to meet the standards and criteria required by clients, class and statutory regulations they perform the duties of lead internal auditor, lead incident investigator, health, safety and environment advisor to the fleet.

You will have sailed for a minimum of one year as a master mariner, have experience in bulk carrier vessel management and onshore experience as a marine superintendent.

You will have strong organisation, delegation and communication skills and it is essential that you have up to date maritime legislation knowledge.

Main Accountabilities

  • Ensure that company owned and managed vessels are operated in a safe, efficient and economical manner in full compliance with class and statutory regulations
  • Liaise with port captain and vessel masters with reference to certification, safety equipment etc.
  • Ensure that all mandatory procedures i.e. risk assessments, permits to work etc. are used effectively and filed for audit purposes
  • Ensure that vessels carry the required publications, procedures, operational manuals and other documentation required by flag and other regulatory bodies and that these are updated as required.
  • Plan audits in the office and on board vessels
  • Co-ordinate internal audits on board vessels to be conducted by the vessel managers
  • Co-ordinate approval, certification and external audit of the HSE Management system ashore and on-board vessels to be conducted by the Flag or recognised organisations
  • Maintain HSE records
  • Provide HSE Management system information as required
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency of the HSE management system and if deemed necessary report non-conformities.
  • Assist with investigating any accidents or incidents and preparing reports in conjunction with the Vessel manager
  • Monitor the performance of sub-contractor services provided to vessel operations (e.g. consumables, catering) and liaising with sub-contractor to report, discuss and implement any corrective actions considered necessary.
