The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) investigates significant aviation, rail, and marine accidents and incidents with a view to avoiding similar occurrences in the future. The Commission has set a visionary goal of "No Repeat Accidents - Ever!"

Accident investigation is a highly specialised and time critical task involving expertise in a wide range of disciplines - and skilled accident investigators are pivotal to the Commission's successful performance.

Based in central Wellington, New Zealand, we're seeking a marine expert to join this highly skilled team. We're keen to hear from you if you have sea going experience as a Master Mariner on a SOLAS class vessel. Alternatively, you might be an experienced chief officer with over five years' experience:

  • In ship handling or pilotage activity
  • As nautical surveyor of ICAS Classification Societies or as a Flag State Inspector
  • Safety, compliance, or risk management within the marine industry.


With an interesting and unpredictable workload you'll need to be agile, positive, resilient, and a true self-starter. In addition, your key competencies and capabilities will include:

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent levels of accuracy and attention to detail
  • an ability to anticipate and identify risks/issues with a solutions lens
  • Project management skills
  • Strong relationship management skills including diplomacy, tact, and the ability to related to a wide range of people
  • Excellent communication skills
  • an understanding of quasi-judicial processes, particularly the rules and requirements applicable to a Commission of Inquiry
  • Emotional and psychological maturity to handle stressful and emotionally difficult situations - as well as being medically and physically fit.


You'll have the ability to apply your industry knowledge and experience in an impartial manner, combined with comprehensive analytical and technical writing skills in order to draft safety investigation reports.
