Cargo Superintendent/Port Captain (Singapore)
Reporting to the Global Head of Cargo Operations, we are looking for a Cargo Superintendent to provide cargo related technical support to the Operations and Chartering department.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING | THE ROLE
For the Operations Department
- Assess ship’s cargo uplift
- Assess required space for steel cargoes and breakbulk projects
- Prepare stowage plans and relevant calculations
- Prepare securing plans and relevant calculations
- Provide technical background on cargo related issues
- Provide guidance on applicable regulations for each type of cargo.
- Provide advice on different seamanship’s related topics
- Give guidance on cargo hold preparation and cleaning
- Discuss stowage or cargo related topics with Master and Owners
For the Chartering Department
- Assess suitability of ships for certain cargo or contracts
- Assess the acceptability of cargo for safe shipment
- Provide technical information about the vessels
- Provide advice on cargo handling restrictions
- Provide advice on different seamanship’s related topics
- Participate in vessel’s scheduling meetings
- Request and evaluate stevedoring rates for both load and discharge operations
Out of the office
- Physical supervision of stowage and securing of cargo
- Coordination of gang ordering and ship’s working schedules
- Supervise stevedore work when required
- Supervise special loading or unloading operations
- Pre-inspect special cargoes on site
- Act as the company representative
- Interface between the office, stevedores and the ship
Other
- Keep informed of developing regulations (national and international)
- Keep informed of new developments related to cargo handling and carriage
- Communicate knowledge and experience to colleagues (Operations and Chartering)
WHAT YOU BRING | THE PERSON
The ideal candidate has:
- Experience as a Master/Chief Officer on ocean going vessels
- Relevant degree in Nautical Sciences
- Minimum of 5 years prior experience in a similar role as Cargo Superintendent, Port Captain or SuperCargo.
- Knowledge of ship construction, structural strength, trim, and stability
- Knowledge/experience in stowage, lashing, and other requirements for the carriage of breakbulk cargoes, such as steel, projects, heavy lifts
- Knowledge/experience with grain stability calculations and regulations
- Knowledge of IMSBC Code and other relevant regulations and conventions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Fluent in English (spoken and written)
- Ability to efficiently interact with ship’s Masters and crew
- Good organizer, strong attention to detail
- Problem solver: stress resistant with the ability to make decisions and work independently
- Computer proficient

- Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours (including weekends) as required
