Senior Lawyer Defence / Charterers & Traders – London

We are looking for a talented and motivated lawyer to join our Defence / Charterers & Traders Claims team in our London office. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of shipping claims for our members and clients across different regions and sectors. Who are you?
You are an English qualified lawyer with at least 6 years’ experience or with at least 6 years’ experience in another common law jurisdiction and about to become qualified as an English lawyer. You are working at a recognized law firm; another P & I club or a trading house. You have experience dealing with shipping claims Ideally for both Owners and Charterers/traders. You have the ability to work with a high degree of autonomy but know when to ask colleagues for help. You want to proactively deal with cases to get the best results for member and clients. You are enthusiastic and helpful and get on well with your colleagues.
 

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work with our Defence team based in London acting for Members and Charterer & Trader Clients in the UK, Europe, Turkey and the Middle East. The role involves giving on-the-spot legal advice to existing Members and Clients, balancing a case load commensurate to your experience, and managing external lawyers involved in complex litigation and claims. You will work in cooperation with highly engaged and knowledgeable colleagues based in London and Gard’s other offices in Arendal, Oslo, New York, Singapore, Piraeus, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Managing relationships with colleagues in Gard and with Members, clients and brokers will be crucial, as will the ability to proactively deal with enquiries, manage cases, work in a fast-paced collaborative team environment with a knowledge sharing mindset and provide value added services to the customer such as training and presentations.
 

Skills and requirements

Candidates should be English law qualified, or with at least 6 years’ experience in another common law jurisdiction and about to become qualified as an English lawyer, with experience in dry shipping and a minimum of 6 years PQE at a recognized law firm, another P&I Club or a trading house. Some background in P & I and/or dealing with charterers claims and/or commodities and trade work would be a positive. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide legal assistance to colleagues working in other claims processes across Gard as well as to their own Members and clients.
