Defence lawyer – Arendal/Oslo
We have a vacancy for a Defence lawyer in our Defence (FD&D) team. The position can be either in Oslo or based at our head office, Arendal, Norway.
Key responsibilities:
You will work primarily, but not exclusively, with our Defence Members in northern Europe dealing with a wide range of international shipping disputes. The role involves giving legal advice to existing owner and charterer Members, balancing a busy case load, and managing external lawyers involved in complex litigation and claims.
You will work in close co-operation with highly engaged and knowledgeable colleagues based in Oslo, Arendal, New York and many of Gard’s other offices including London, Singapore, Piraeus, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Managing Member and broker relationships will be crucial, as will the ability to pro-actively handle cases, work in a team and provide value added services to the Members such as training and presentations. There is ample opportunity to develop strong and lasting relationships with Members who appreciate, in addition to sound legal knowledge, attention to detail and highly tuned communication skills.
In addition to handling FD&D disputes for Members, the successful candidate will also be expected to provide legal assistance to colleagues working in other claims areas across Gard. Some experience in relation to P&I cover and the types of disputes that arise will therefore be a positive attribute.
Who are you:
- You have good understanding and a minimum 2-3 years working experience of English contractual and tortious law and be a qualified lawyer in your home jurisdiction.
- You are capable of maintaining effectiveness whilst under pressure.
- You have the ability to work with a high degree of autonomy. At the same time, you must be able to work with and as part of a team of capable and experienced shipping lawyers.
- You have excellent skills to build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, Members and clients.
- You have a high degree of cultural, equality, diversity, and inclusion awareness.
- A background in shipping law and/or commercial litigation with a recognized law firm, another International Group P&I Club or relevant experience as in-house Counsel might be considered as advantageous.
