The Port of London Authority (PLA) oversees 95 miles of the tidal Thames: a world river in a world city. It has responsibility for managing Britain’s busiest river and providing essential services to one of the UK’s largest ports. It is responsible for navigational safety, promotes the
use of the river for trade and travel, sport and leisure, and protects the marine environment.
Created by an Act of Parliament, the PLA is run commercially and works in partnership with a wide group of stakeholders, including central and local government, commercial, recreational and residential river users and interest groups. Safety and conservation lie at the heart of its mission.
